5 Steelers free agents who are likely to return to the team in 2021
By Tommy Jaggi
Jordan Dangerfield
This isn’t the most excited player who could potentially return to the team next season, but I’ve learned not to bet against Jordan Dangerfield. Over the years, the Steelers have drafted younger and more athletic safeties as potential depth options, yet Dangerfield has managed to stick around since 2014 (with a short absence in 2015 in between).
Now 30 years old, Dangerfield is an unrestricted free agent, but his value on special teams is clearly coveted by Pittsburgh. Without any potential to be a rotational defensive player, Dangerfield is not going to find a job anywhere else, and I’d be shocked if the Steelers didn’t sign him to compete for another year.
While it’s entirely possible that this could be the season the former undrafted strong safety finally gets pushed off the roster in favor of a younger more talented player, Dangerfield earned 63 percent of special teams snaps season. Something tells me that with the Steelers bringing back Ben Roethlisberger for one more season, they are going to want every veteran returning that they can get.
