3. Running back

It’s possible that the Steelers have the worst running back situation in the entire league; yet I would only rank this as the third-biggest need on the team at the moment, as finding a center and an offensive tackle are even more important. Still, there’s no doubt Pittsburgh will do everything they can to improve this group in April.

James Conner is an unrestricted free agent, and he is very unlikely to re-sign with the Steelers. This leaves Benny Snell, Anthony McFarland, and Jaylen Samuels on the roster. Snell had one nice game in Week 1 of 2020 but was wildly ineffective after that. While he’s got the frame to be an every-down back, his subpar traits and lack of any sort of speed or exposition make him a reserve running back at best.

The Steelers are unlikely to look to fill the void in free agency as they won’t want to fork up money for an average running back. Fortunately, there are plenty of options in the NFL Draft. Najee Harris and Javontae Williams are two names that have been tied to Pittsburgh if they choose to address the position early this April.
