Kevin Colbert’s tenure with the Pittsburgh Steelers has been very successful. It has become more common in recent years for the team to be active in free agency even if some moves were bad.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are one of the most successful franchises in NFL history. The recent tenure of their GM has allowed the team to stay in contention for nearly the last 20 years. It seems this era will be drawing to a close in the next couple of years. With success also comes some failures while trying to achieve the ultimate prize, a Super Bowl victory.

Not every move can be good while managing an NFL team. There is so much pressure on the person that holds the position. That pressure is even more amplified when you operate the Steelers. The fans in Steelers Nation want success every year. They want playoff wins, divisional championships, and more than anything they want Super Bowl Sunday victories.

Free agency has not always been the team’s go-to for fixing the issues. Colbert and his staff focus more on drafting and developing their own talent to replace players. It has become more of a recent phenomenon that the black and gold make deals with outside free agents. Those signings do not always work out. It could be the fit, the player, or a multitude of other factors. Making those moves are always a gamble and some of those did not pan out for Colbert and the Steelers. Most times signing the big name in free agency is not the best choice for building a team.
