While the odds of the Steelers investing heavily in outside free agents is slim given their salary issues, the team could still add a few pieces from outside of the organization. The team needs to get better at running the ball, however, there will be a lot of needs in the draft which could push running back down the board. The team could instead opt to sign a veteran on a cheap deal in order to help make their backfield more competitive.

There will be plenty of names in this free agency market that could intrigue the Steelers. Chief among them may be Marlon Mack, as the soon-to-be-former Colt has been successful as a pure runner but has injury questions to answer this season. He may be willing to sign for the short term for cheap if it means a chance to rebuild his value. As well, given his size, he fits the typical mold of a power back in this offense.

Even if they look elsewhere, adding a talented running back for cheap this offseason could allow the team to invest their limited resources elsewhere in the draft. While this wouldn’t be a permanent solution to the running back issue, it could allow for the team to be built elsewhere. Eventually, a rookie will be brought in, but they will greatly benefit from a more complete offensive line built up before they join the roster.
