A lot of fans won’t like waiting this long for an offensive tackle to go off the board, but the Steelers aren’t in a spot where they have to take a tackle early. The starters are likely set, and while some long-term options are needed, the Steelers can roll the dice with a developmental prospect. Tommy Doyle fits the bill, as his tremendous size and small school status make him an intriguing late-round developmental tackle.
Doyle was at one point hyped up as a potential early-round tackle, but his last season was limited with COVID restrictions. Because of this, his value is lower than it was once thought to be. He wouldn’t be a starter right away for the team, but he could serve as the swing tackle early on for the Steelers. Long term, if he properly develops, he could be a starter at either side at tackle.
The Steelers have a lot of needs to fill this offseason, and they could look to sure up the offensive tackle position prior to the draft, as Ben Roethlisberger will probably want a blindside protector he is a bit more comfortable with than a rookie. If that is the case, perhaps Pittsburgh doesn’t dip into the offensive tackle pool until day three of the NFL Draft.
