The Pittsburgh Steelers have little wiggle room when it comes to cap space moving forward and signing free agents will need to be cheap.

It has been a tough couple of days for the Steelers as many of their own players have figured out deals to join other NFL teams. It was expected due to the lack of cap space the black and yellow have but it is still a tough pill to swallow. Now the team will begin to look for places to fill the voids left behind after these players walked away.

Pittsburgh is notorious for drafting and developing their own players instead of constantly relying on free agency but this year might have to be different. Even though there is a major lack of money to spend, there could still be deals found on the cheaper end as time passes and free agents that are still available grow impatient. That is when the Steelers will need to take advantage and jump in to scoop these players onto their team for cheap.

Nick Martin, Center

Getting Nick Martin here would be a huge upgrade over those currently on the roster. B.J. Finney and J.C. Hassenauer don’t seem to be reliable starters but getting Martin would not only be an upgrade in play but also experience. He has played at a high level for a long time and bringing that experience along a front that will be much younger is immeasurable. Bringing a stable veteran presence to a new group will be huge for congealing that front and protecting Ben Roethlisberger. It is unknown what Martin’s market currently looks like but if the Steelers can get him cheaper on a short-term deal then this will be a steal.
