Three draft options for the Steelers to replace CB Mike Hilton
Draft option if Sutton becomes an outside CB?
Now let’s imagine a scenario where Sutton does become a cornerback for the Steelers within the next two years, where he is listed on the outside. Considering the current makeup of the CB room, it’s an injury away from happening.
Understandably, an offensive lineman & running back are the favorites to be the picks for Pittsburgh in the first two rounds; however, exceptions happen. Teams should draft based on need but shouldn’t only draft because of that selected need, especially when there’s a player that falls that is the exception.
Elijah Molden is that exception.
Establishing their pedigree in the college secondary ranks, Molden is Washington’s 2020 featured DB. Slated in the slot as a Husky, that will be his position in the NFL & the Steelers wouldn’t look back if he were to be drafted to the Black & Gold.
Although he only comes in at 5’10, 190 lbs, his play speaks with the best of them in this class. He’s a brilliant player with excellent instincts in man to zone & as physical as they come as a tackler. Coupling that with a high football IQ & technique that rarely puts him out of position, he has potential star-power.
Molden will not be the most outstanding athlete on the field but a technician that turns him into a playmaker. In his last 17 starts, Molden has collected 13 pass breakups & 5 interceptions, along with the most forced incompletions from a power five DB since 2014 in the slot.
Again, the Steelers have to consider the possibility of Sutton primarily on the outside not only now but also in the near future, given his talent. More than just a replacement for Hilton, Molden also secures the nickel position for the next few years if that switch needs to occur.
