Pat Freiermuth, TE, Penn State

Everyone knows that the Steelers have been searching for a replacement since Heath Miller retired following the 2015 season. It has been a long and windy road to find that successor to Miller that has mostly ended in failure. Eric Ebron is a nice pass-catching option for the team but they have missed a true number one all-around player at the position for years.

The team has neglected to draft the position high for a very long time but that could change in this year’s draft. Pat Freiermuth is nicknamed Baby Gronk after Rob Gronkowski, that is for good reason. Freiermuth plays an extremely physical brand of football that allows for the extra blocker to go out and become an uncoverable force down the field.

He would become the best tight end on the team once he stepped foot on the grass in Latrobe. It would shock some as the player is mocked to go in the second round so this could be a trade back option for the team if they really wanted Freiermuth over other players. He is coming off of shoulder surgery and that could be worrisome if that hinders him during his career but that is not likely.

During Penn State’s Pro Day, the entire Steelers brass was there including Kevin Colbert, Mike Tomlin, and the tight end coach Alfredo Roberts who was helping him go through drills. Do not rule him out in the first round or a potential trade back to gain more picks and select the Penn State product.

The Steelers always look for certain traits in their prospects and these three fit the bill. It will be interesting to see what the team does when draft time happens.
