Steelers Pro Day visits led by Kevin Colbert and Mike Tomlin
Colbert and Tomlin head back home
Returning up to the state of Pennsylvania, one school, in particular, should bring great interest for Pittsburgh fans. What’s only a 2-3 hour drive from Heinz Field, Steelers TEs coach Alfredo Roberts likely had the least stressful commute of them all, as they traveled out for the pro day of Penn State.
Whether teams were in attendance to see a potential top-ten pick of LB Micah Parson or be awed by the drill numbers of EDGE Jayson Oweh, the Steelers had their minds settled. If not for the generational talent of Florida’s TE Kyle Pitts, Penn State’s TE Pat Freiermuth would have the right to argue that he is TE1.
A need that typically goes under the radar and has not seen a true success in this offense since the 2008 season of Heath Miller. Do not be shocked if Pat is a serious candidate for an early-round pick.
He’s a big-body presence that will make his money in the middle of the field that is physical and does well in catching the ball in contested areas. Will he be the best athlete? No, but with a nickname like “Baby Gronk,” you can’t help but draw the relation and comparison directly to their play-style.
If you weren’t tired of reading names as much as Colbert and Tomlin are probably in collecting air-miles, Michigan would be the latest reported college they would visit with Assistant OL coach Chris Morgan.
Singularly, OT Jalen Mayfield. Essentially regarded as a top 30-40 prospect for the draft, he’s another one of those names in this OT class that makes it so appealing. However, his rawness as a player is projecting to provide early troubles for him in the NFL and wasn’t the most impressive at his pro day.
Although he lacks so much athletically, Mayfield makes up for it with his footwork and how he can win consistently with good leverage. Described as a better pass-blocker than he is in the run, his experience as a tackle on both sides also adds more value to his profile and should only get better as time goes.
