James Conner, Running Back

James Conner is a beloved sports figure in the city of Pittsburgh ever since his college playing days. He has been one of the bigger names in the city as the local kid from Erie, PA got to the University of Pittsburgh and became their eventual starter. His cancer diagnosis was shocking to everyone but he battled that fight and became an eventual third-round selection by the Steelers. The local kid was staying home and playing for his childhood team. It was something straight out of a movie and fans were excited to see what the future held for him.

After the whole Le’Veon Bell saga played out, Conner was the guy for this team. He had a breakout year during his first season as a starter but since then he has not been the same player. He has struggled with injuries and the run game has been less than productive in recent seasons. That is not entirely Conner’s fault since the offensive line struggled to make any gaps for him to run through.

Conner seems like he might leave the team and that could be the best option for the two moving forward. If the black and gold cannot address the running back need in the draft early on then re-signing this player could very well be in the cards. It will take some time and the former Pitt product might not want to wait that long for a deal to be made. But it seems like there are not many teams interested in free agency up to this point so he could be a nice fallback option if the team cannot get a decent back in the draft.
