10 most likely picks for Steelers first round of the 2021 NFL Draft
Tevin Jenkins OL, Oklahoma State
Chance drafted by Steelers: 5%
Jenkin’s odds in the draft are somewhat peculiar. Mock drafts have teams drafting him anywhere from the 15th selection to falling out of the first round altogether. A few have him falling to the Steelers; even Mel Kiper Jr has suggested it. He has an approximate 63% chance of remaining on the board when the Steelers select.
Why take Jenkins? He’s athletic and can play on either side of the line. Jenkins stays square and can easily turn defenders away from the action. He can pick apart linebackers and always keeps his feet moving. Jenkins can also open holes for the running back. His only downside, if any, is his arm length, and he does not always sink his backside at the line of scrimmage. If the Steelers plan on bolstering their offensive line with their first selection, then Jenkins is a solid choice, and he should be available.
Alijah-Vera Tucker Ol, USC
Chance drafted by Steelers: 5%
It’s hard to imagine Tucker remaining on the board by the time the Steelers select, given the amount of interest in him. However, If Rashawn Slater drops to later selections and Dickerson, Jenkins, and Sam Cosmi go ahead of Tucker, it’s conceivable he could slip to the Steelers. If this occurs, there is no question they draft Tucker.
Tucker is considered one of the most versatile offensive linemen in the draft, he always has good pad level and stays square. He blocks well on pass rushers despite his shortness. His negatives include being a better run blocker than a pass blocker; Tucker does not always finish his pass blocks. Plus, he’s a bit short for playing the tackle position. If the Steelers want to replace Villanueva, and he’s available, they pull the trigger on Tucker.
