RB Anthony McFarland: 6th round

I really liked Anthony McFarland coming out of Maryland last year. Though he came in at just 5’8”, he had a solid frame at 208 pounds (which is only four pounds lighter than North Carolina RB Javonte Williams weighed in at). In addition to a low center of gravity and the ability to break arm tackles, McFarland clocked in with a 4.44 in the 40-yard dash last year and has the type of speed to shred defenses.

Unfortunately, he wasn’t given much opportunity last year, and when he did have a few holes, he failed to take advantage. Because of such a lackluster rookie season, I think McFarland would actually hurt his stock if he were to be inserted into the 2021 NFL Draft this year.

McFarland is still a young player who was running behind a bad offensive line in 2020 and he could certainly turn things around after receiving just 33 carries in 11 active games. The 2021 class isn’t a great group for running backs, but teams might be willing to take a chance on guys like Kylin Hill or Rhamondre Stevenson after watching McFarland do little to nothing during his rookie year.

Overall, Pittsburgh’s 2020 draft class was spectacular, and it’s even better if you think of Minkah Fitzpatrick as their first-round pick (which was the selection used to acquire him). If these guys were to be thrown back into the 2021 NFL Draft, almost all of them would go higher than their original draft spot from last April.
