Horn’s Projection

There is almost no chance that Horn isn’t picked in the first round now. His athleticism and tape will make him an intriguing draft option, and while players like Patrick Surtain II or Caleb Farley will likely be the first two corners taken, Horn should hear his name called shortly afterward. It wouldn’t be shocking if he went earlier as well, he has that much promise as a prospect.

If he makes it to pick 24, the Steelers should be all over him. Losing Nelson was a blow, but adding a prospect like Horn would easily make up for it. He would enter the competition as the third cornerback with the likes of James Pierre and Justin Layne, and while I am a fan of Pierre’s, Horn would be a considerable upgrade.

In terms of the role that he would serve, I would allow Cameron Sutton and Joe Haden to be the starting cornerbacks in base defense. When the Steelers go to subpackage though, Sutton would slide to the slot and allow Horn to take over on the outside. This would keep Horn off the field in running situations and allow him to work on developing his tackling as opposed to bouncing off opposing offenses during his rookie year. As well, the team’s potent pass rush could force some errant throws his way which could result in him seeing some healthy interception opportunities.

Long term, Horn would have to improve more as an all-around cornerback before being relied upon as an every-down starter. If he works on his tackling though, Horn could ascend into one of the best press corners in the league. He needs a little refinement, but that shouldn’t stop the Steelers from targeting him. One would have to think he is squarely in play at pick 24.
