Steelers don’t need to draft a quarterback this year
Joshua Dobbs by himself may not be enough of a reason for the Steelers to avoid spending a draft choice on a quarterback this April, but when you consider all of the factors, I would be surprised if they elected to go this route in the 2021 NFL Draft. While he doesn’t have a lot of game experience, Pittsburgh apparently liked Dobbs enough to bring him back and compete for a roster spot in the upcoming season.
As of now, the Steelers have Ben Roethlisberger, Mason Rudolph, Dwayne Haskins, and Josh Dobbs all under contract in 2021. After looking like this was bound to be one of the thinnest positions on their roster next year, they suddenly have a surplus of depth.
While this doesn’t necessarily mean that the quarterback of the future is on the roster, Pittsburgh could certainly stand to wait one more season before spending high draft capital on a passer – especially considering that they are in a closing Super Bowl window this year. If there were any thoughts that the Steelers might try to grab a quarterback in the first few rounds of the NFL Draft, we can almost certainly put this to bed now. Barring having a talented quarterback fall into their lap, I can’t see Pittsburgh spending a draft choice on a quarterback this April with four capable players on the roster.
