Mason Rudolph

Mason Rudolph showed some serious improvement in his lone start last season. He looked far more composed in the pocket and was methodically choosing his passes down the field. Considering this growth and the importance of the quarterback market, Rudolph would likely have a market for a team looking for a cheap addition to their quarterback room. While he is slated to be the backup next season, if the Steelers are serious about adding a quarterback in the draft, keeping Rudolph makes little sense.

As well, Rudolph is in the last year of his rookie deal. Had Ben Roethlisberger retired, Rudolph almost certainly would have been the starter this season. Since he won’t have that opportunity anymore and it is doubtful the team invests serious money in him, he will likely walk next offseason. Adding a quarterback to this room means Rudolph should find his way onto a new roster.

While it is unlikely to get back a third-round pick for Rudolph, he could fetch as high as a fourth-round pick. Joshua Dobbs got a fifth a few years back and Joe Flacco netted a fourth as well. Rudolph could realistically get a fourth-rounder this year from a team that wants to start him. Again, the caveat here is that the Steelers actually draft a quarterback, as it would make their depth chart far too crowded. If the team goes for a quarterback early in this draft, Rudolph would be a logical trade candidate.
