While safety is far from the biggest need, Trevon Moehrig can do enough other things to make him worthy of being a first-round pick for the Steelers. While naturally a free safety, he can also work as a slot defender and even closer to the line in dime defense. The team has no need for a free safety with Minkah Fitzpatrick under contract and likely set to sign a huge deal next year. His counterpart, Terrell Edmunds, future with the team is a lot less certain. That gives Moehrig a path to eventually settling in as a safety.

His role in his rookie season would likely come in the slot. The Steelers could keep Cameron Sutton on the outside and allow Moehrig to take over Mike Hilton’s old job. Moehrig is built in that more physical mode that Hilton was, meaning the team can continue to do a lot of the same things they did before. From blitzing the slot corner to having a sub package out against rushing offenses, having a capable and physical slot cornerback is a huge plus.

Add in the fact that Teryl Austin was at the TCU pro day and Moehrig had a personal meeting with the team and suddenly him getting drafted in the first seems like a real possibility. While there are better fits overall, Moehrig has undeniable talent and is worthy of being the pick if there. His role would progressively expand, but his specific role in year one would fill a huge need for the team.
