What makes him the perfect second running back to target is the capital it would cost to get him.

I’ve seen mocks where Boyd falls as low as the 6th round or even goes undrafted. He started off in 2020 very slowly before opting out midway through the college season. Opt-outs have been lowering players on a lot of draft boards heading into this draft and that could give the Steelers the chance to possibly get their 2nd best runner in the committee with a 6th round pick, or undrafted.

He is the kind of guy Pittsburgh doesn’t shy away from. We have seen the Steelers take players with questionable backgrounds and give them a chance to succeed. It’s no surprise that Boyd’s best tape was from the Last Chance U. It wasn’t because of the lack of competition, at the National contention level of Junior college the teams are filled with mostly former D-1 prospects anyways. It was because of the tough no-nonsense approach from his head coach Jason Brown. Brown would later resign after some negative reports came out about how he talked to his players, but in Boyd’s best season of football to date, a tough no-nonsense environment allowed him to shine.

The Steelers will be able to give him that structure, in a more professional setting, while not having to dump too much on his plate. He is an opt-out player with a troubled past, but the Last Chance U fan favorite would be able to contribute to and help stabilize the back end of the running back room from day one. As a 6th round draft pick, or possibly undrafted rookie free agent, he could end up being an amazing find for the Steelers.

There is a decent chance Boyd goes in the mid-rounds on draft day. However, if his rough senior season and his decision to opt-out halfway through the season cause him to fall to the 6th round, or keep him from being drafted, then the Steelers absolutely have to be considering bringing him in for the offseason.
