5 needs the Steelers need to address in the 2021 NFL Draft
By Devan Penman
5. Lineman
We have all known by following this sport that every play starts upfront. It starts with the snap of the football and the linemen from either side make their first step to block through or block to protect the quarterback and assist the runner. Statistics have shown however that the offensive and defensive lines are not what they used to be for the Steelers organization. Mainly it is from players that get released from their contracts and move elsewhere or simply retire that players who needed to step up do not have the star power their counterparts have had; there are 2 soon-to-be Hall of Famers that the Steelers need to fill; at Center and at Tackle (replacing Maurkice Pouncey that retired shortly after the season ended and Marcus Gilbert who left for Arizona and recently retired).
Recently on the Defensive side, Pittsburgh has improved greatly with recent acquisitions of TJ Watt, Vince Williams, Devin Bush, and Minkah Fitzpatrick. It probably will not hurt us if we select a strong, and speedier Defensive lineman to bring in more pressure upfront to disrupt the backfield or sack the quarterback. With more Offenses going to an option-heavy scheme, a slight improvement to stop the attack would benefit greatly.
For the most part, the Draft has been part of the regular offseason that the Steelers are at their best. The spotlight will be shining down on them when they are on the clock at the 24th spot starting tonight.
