Tight ends: Pat Freiermuth, Eric Ebron, Zach Gentry
The Steelers finally spend a top-two draft choice on a tight end for the first time in 16 years. While Pat Freiermuth isn’t on the same level coming out of college as Heath Miller, in my opinion, he will certainly be an upgrade over what this offense had from a season ago. He will begin the year as the TE2 in Pittsburgh, but I almost expect him to be out-snapping Eric Ebron by the end of his rookie year.
Ebron was a solid contributor for the Steelers last year, but his subpar blocking and inconsistent hands leave us wanting more from the tight end position. Still, there’s no chance of him getting cut this offseason, and he will open the year as the starter with Freiermuth sprinkled in.
The last tight end spot is up for grabs, in all honesty. Though the Steelers spent a fifth-round draft choice on Gentry in 2019, that isn’t elite enough capital to force them to stick with the big tight end if someone beats him out. Still, I have the former Michigan product earning my final tight end spot, as the team never carries more than three at a time. Kevin Rader and Dax Raymond could put up a fight, but I have them falling short of making the roster again this year.
