New Ravens OT Alejandro Villanueva takes a jab at Steelers wide receivers
By Tommy Jaggi
It didn’t take long for Alejandro Villanueva to take a jab at the Pittsburgh Steelers culture after joining the Baltimore Ravens.
Well, that didn’t take long. Alejandro Villanueva was known for his remarkable back story and being a decorated member of the military. He spent the last seven years as a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers while earning 90 starts and making two Pro Bowl appearances. However, everything changes when you are wearing black and purple.
The newest addition to the Baltimore Ravens is already acting like a long-time enemy. In a recent video, Villanueva takes a jab at Steelers wide receivers – making mention of their TikTok use. Here’s some of what he had to say in the video:
"“When you have a balanced offense and when you run the ball, it’s obviously better for the offensive line. I’m assuming it’s not as fun for the wide receivers, because they’re not getting all of their catches; they’re making their TikToks and they’re having fun on their social media.”"
This seemed oddly specific; almost like he was targeted one receiver in particular. You may be familiar with JuJu Smith-Schuster’s social media use. The 24-year-old is no stranger to today’s social media platforms – one of which is TikTok.
Midway through the season, Smith-Schuster started a routine of dancing on the emblem of the opposing team at the middle of the field and posting his videos to social media. Ironically enough, Pittsburgh went on quite the embarrassing run to finish the season.
While JuJu’s dancing may have had nothing at all to do with Pittsburgh’s success (or lack thereof) on the football field late in the year, some of the veterans reportedly approached Smith-Schuster and asked him to cut it out. He was reluctant to do so for a few weeks but ultimately complied.
Villanueva is apparently still salty about this. It’s evident that the former Pro Bowl offensive tackle wasn’t pleased with the way things were being run inside Pittsburgh’s locker room. In fact, AV seems to be quite excited to start the next chapter in his NFL journey with the Baltimore Ravens.
I’m not going to say who is right or wrong in this situation. While Alejandro Villanueva is obviously not happy with the way things were being run in Pittsburgh, he probably didn’t need to take a shot at the Steelers wide receivers. While I may not agree with all of the social media attention players devote to on the team’s time, at least this could be enough to give JuJu Smith-Schuster and Chase Claypool some added motivation when they square off against the Ravens this year.
