Shaquem Griffin is more than just an inspirational story. Here’s why the Steelers should make a push to sign the athletic linebacker.

Shaquem Griffin was one of my favorite players to watch entering the 2018 NFL Draft, and it wasn’t just because of his inspirational story. I’m sure you have all seen him in a commercial at this point with his twin brother Shaquill. Both players were the stars of their team during their college days at UCF, but one brother was playing at a severe disadvantage.

Shaquem may have just one hand, but this didn’t stop him from being drafted in the 5th round by the Seattle Seahawks in 2018. Over the past three seasons, the athletic linebacker spent most of his time playing special teams, and last year he saw a career-high 113 defensive snaps for Seattle.

Unfortunately, Griffin was let go before entering the final year of his rookie deal, but recent reports suggest that he won’t be on the market much longer. According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, multiple teams have expressed interest in Shaquem Griffin:

Despite his physical disadvantage, Griffin has played in 46 of a possible 48 games to begin his NFL career, and there are several traits that should have every NFL team interested in acquiring his services. The Steelers should be near the top of the list.

Why Steelers should sign Shaquem Griffin

Griffin was terrific in college. As a redshirt junior back in 2016, he recorded 92 tackles, 20.0 tackles for a loss, and 11.5 sacks. In addition, he chipped in 7 pass defenses, 2 forced fumbles, and 2 fumble recoveries. Griffin also managed 3 interceptions during his final 3 seasons at UCF.

The Steelers could use an upgrade at inside linebacker, but what Griffin brings to the table may not be better than what they already have at the position. Devin Bush is returning from an ACL tear he suffered early last season, and Vince Williams was released and re-signed this offseason on a cheaper deal. As an inside linebacker, Griffin would have a very hard time seeing the field. But maybe there is a different role he could play in Pittsburgh.

Shaquem Griffin’s specialty has always been his ability to get after the quarterback. At just 6′ 3/8” and 227 pounds, Griffin is very undersized as an edge rusher, but he makes up for his shortcomings with terrific 4.38-speed. In addition, his bend, quickness, and ability to change directions on a dime almost remind me of when Troy Polamalu used to blitz the quarterback.

Even after the NFL Draft, the Steelers remain razor-thin at the edge defender position. T.J. Watt and Alex Highsmith will be the starters in 2021 but behind them, 6th-round rookie Quincy Roche and veteran Cassius Marsh are the only viable options.

Griffen certainly couldn’t operate as a full-time edge defender in a pinch due to his severe lack of size and length, but he could push Marsh for the final edge rusher spot on the team. At the very least, he would provide a good, athletic special teams presence and a player who could rush off the edge for Steelers in obvious passing situations.

Shaquem Griffin is an inspiration to millions… but he’s also a very good football player who deserves a home on an NFL team. With Bud Dupree and Ola Adeniyi departed this offseason, the Steelers could use another player who could give them a spark getting after the quarterback.
