NFL schedule: The good and bad about Steelers facing the Bills in Week 1
By Tommy Jaggi
The bad: Ben Roethlisberger can no longer keep pace with Josh Allen
This is not a slight against Ben Roethlisberger at all. We all know that Big Ben has had his time in the spotlight, and he will be rewarded with a Hall of Fame jacket in the near future because of it. However, it would be naive of us to believe that Roethlisberger is good enough to go toe-to-toe with Josh Allen without extra assistance from his team.
Though Ben has two Super Bowl Rings, it’s been a while since we have seen truly elite play from him. On the other hand, Josh Allen was one of the top MVP candidates of the 2020 season – and for good reason. Last year counting the playoffs, Allen recorded 51 total touchdowns and just 11 interceptions. This blows Ben Roethlisberger’s best statistical season out of the water. As a result, Allen led his team to a 13-3 record, 2 playoff wins, and an appearance against the Chiefs in the AFC Championship Game last year.
With the Steelers losing some pivotal players this offseason, their roster doesn’t look quite as good on paper as it did a year ago. The Bills, however, have played some of their best football the franchise has seen in a long time in 2020. With a 24-year-old star quarterback at the helm, the arrow only continues to point up. Allen could certainly outpace Roethlisberger in Week 1, and it will take a remarkable defensive performance to keep this content close.
The Steelers are going to be underdogs in this contest, but that doesn’t mean they don’t have a chance of upsetting the Buffalo Bills on the road in Week 1. Perhaps they can catch them napping to open the season.
