Bruce Irvin

Bruce Irvin has never really been a dominant full-time edge defender, but he was one of the better pass rushers in the league during his glory days, and he has had 6 seasons where he managed to record at least 6.5 sacks. After earning 8.5 sacks in just 13 games in 2019 with the Carolina Panthers, Irvin rejoined the Seattle Seahawks. Unfortunately, an ACL tear ended his season back in September.

Because of his age (33) and the fact that he is coming off a major injury, the Steelers might be able to acquire Irvin for half the price he would have initially gone for. Irvin isn’t exactly a stout defender against the run, but he’s certainly no worse than Marsh in this department. However, what he offers as a pass rusher could rival that of even Alex Highsmith this year.

Bruce Irvin’s best days are no doubt behind him, but this potential free-agent pickup could help make sure the Steelers maintain an elite pass rush if something were to happen to Watt or Highsmith this season.

The Steelers don’t have a lot of needs to fill after the NFL Draft, but this is a position that could certainly stand to be upgraded after losing Bud Dupree and Ola Adeniyi this offseason. These four players could be had for the right price and would offer a significant upgrade to their depth on the edge.
