2. Extending cornerback Cameron Sutton

Even before the Steelers lost Mike Hilton and Steven Nelson in free agency, they knew they wanted to lock up cornerback Cameron Sutton. According to Pro Football Focus, Sutton has graded out as the best of the group in each of the past two seasons, and he has worn multiple hats for Pittsburgh in the secondary as an outside cornerback, nickel defender, and dime backer.

The best part is that the Steelers were able to retain Sutton on a very reasonable contract that came in much lower than Spotrac.com had predicted. The 25-year-old cornerback is now signed for two more seasons for just $4.5 million per year. This is one of the better financial decisions Pittsburgh has made in recent years.

We still need to see Sutton in a full-time role – likely as an outside cornerback. However, he has given us plenty of reason to believe that he could be the answer for this team moving forward. Considering that a player like Mike Hilton just signed with the Bengals for $6 million per season, Sutton’s contract looks very good. Whenever he’s on the field, he just seems to make plays, and I can easily see him outplaying his contract value for the Steelers over these next two seasons.
