The Steelers missed out on Ryan Kerrigan, but Justin Houston could be even better for Pittsburgh in 2021.

The Pittsburgh Steelers were apparently one of three teams trying to pursue former four-time Pro Bowl edge defender, Ryan Kerrigan, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Sadly, Kerrigan opted to sign with the Philadelphia Eagles. While I thought he could be had at a discount after sitting in the market for so long, I didn’t expect him to sign for as cheap as he did – a one-year contract worth up to $3.5 million.

I certainly don’t believe that Alex Highsmith needs to be replaced. The 2019 rookie was phenomenal in his first season. However, after losing both Bud Dupree and Ola Adeniyi in free agency and doing next to nothing to replace them, the Steelers could use another edge rusher who can get after the quarterback.

In the event of an injury to Highsmith or T.J. Watt, Pittsburgh would be in big trouble. I really like sixth-round rookie, Quincy Roche, but he shouldn’t be counted on for such a big role from the gate. Free-agent Justin Houston was very productive over his past two seasons with the Colts. Here’s why the Steelers must attempt to sign him this offseason:

Best pure pass rushers still on the market

There are a few quality edge defenders still out there at this point, but for my money, Justin Houston is the best pure pass rusher still on the market. Over the past two seasons, his production has almost mirrored Bud Dupree’s despite playing 300 fewer snaps.

While he may be 32 years old, Houston doesn’t seem to show any signs of slowing down, as the former All-Pro has earned 19.0 sacks over the past two seasons despite playing in a part-time role. Houston’s pass rush prowess would be a welcome addition in the outside linebacker rotation for the Steelers in 2021.
