Pittsburgh has seen many great defensive players over the years, but you have to go back to 1963 to find the player who set the record for the most career fumble recoveries. When Ernie Stautner retired, he had recovered 23 fumbles.
The NFL later enshrined him at Canton in the Hall of Fame. Two other future Steelers hall of fame inductees came close to Stautner’s record Jack Ham who recovered 21, and Donnie Shell recovered 19. Depending on how many years Devin Bush plays for Pittsburgh, he could threaten that record as he had four fumble recoveries in his rookie season.

The subject of career punt averages does not come up very often. In the case of the Steelers, Bobby Joe Green set the record for the highest punt average in a career at 45.7 yards. He set this mark in between the 1960-1961 seasons. In 1960 he also led the NFL with 2829 punting yards and had the longest of the 1960 season at 74 yards.

Rod Woodson set the NFL record for most interception returns for touchdowns in a career throughout the ‘90s. Another Pittsburgh legend and future Hall of Fame inductee set the career record when he retired in 1959. Jack Butler to this day still holds the Steelers record of 827 interception return yards.
