CB Steven Nelson

It’s time to let bygones be bygones. I know Steven Nelson and the Pittsburgh Steelers coaching staff didn’t always see eye to eye, but this is a championship window we are talking about, and we need to put all of this behind us.

Nelson reportedly was upset when he was told that the starting gig wasn’t his and that he was going to have to earn his role. After performing very well in 2019, Nelson came back down to earth in 2020 with just a so-so season. Still, his performance and experience with the team would make him a valuable addition, and one that we could certainly trust a lot more than Justin Layne or James Pierre at the moment.

While it’s certainly possible that one of Pittsburgh’s young cornerbacks could take a step forward in Mike Tomlin’s “next man up” philosophy, but again. Why leave it to chance? If neither Pierre or Layne is ready for such a role, we don’t want to trust a cornerback onto the field in nickel and dime situations who will be repetitively picked on.

There are only a few quality options sitting on the free-agent market. Richard Sherman is a name I would love to see work out, but he would be more expensive than maybe anyone on this list. Nelson just makes a lot of sense after spending the last two years with the Steelers. It’s time to make up and repair this relationship. We have bigger fish to fry.

I don’t know the likelihood of the Steelers adding a free agent – particularly, anyone on this list. However, it was reported that Pittsburgh was in the running to land Ryan Kerrigan. Perhaps they will be willing to beef up these positions in free agency before it’s too late.
