4 former stars Steelers should sign before training camp

Richard Sherman
At one point in time, and for a period of about six years, Richard Sherman was the best zone cover corner in the league. He was a natural ball hawk and a versatile chess piece with the Seahawks. His play faltered slightly as he got older, but he was still a great option even after he signed with the 49ers. Now, he is a name that would make a lot of sense for the team to target.
Now, at 33 years old Sherman would be better suited for a rotational/reserve role as opposed to a natural starter. Luckily for him and the Steelers, Cameron Sutton can serve as the traditional outside cornerback in base defense. When the team requires a slot cornerback, he can move inside and play Sherman on the outside. Even if the team was all in on James Pierre (a player I am personally fond of), adding stiff competition for him makes sense given his unproven status.
The biggest problem with Sherman is his more natural zone tendency. He is a better fit in a zone-heavy scheme, but the Steelers have naturally shifted to a man coverage team. That said, Sherman is still a good player, and he has proven to be an adequate man cover corner during his stint in the league. Given the team’s need at corner, kicking the tires on Sherman would be a wise investment.
