Diontae Johnson: #18

I can see this jersey purchase going one of two ways: either Diontae Johnson really turns things around and becomes a more consistent player who earns a lucrative second contract, or he continues to struggle with drops and fumbles and Pittsburgh lets him hit the market after the 2022 season. Based on his most recent sample of play, you may want to err on the side of caution.

Johnson has some electrifying ability and is incredibly slippery with the ball in his hands. In any given game, he can be the most fun player to watch with the way that he plucks the ball out of the air and makes defenders miss. However, he has also proved to be detrimental to the Steelers at times, and this makes purchasing his jersey a bit of a risk.

What it boils down to is that the Steelers have four quality, young wide receivers, and we know the team can’t afford to pay all of them when their rookie contracts are done. As I mentioned before, I believe Chase Claypool would be the safest purchase, as he has the rarest skill set with his rare size and athletic traits. I’m not saying that Johnson won’t be good enough to earn a rich new deal, but you may want to give him at least a few games in 2021 first to see if he has made any progress since last season.
