Pat Freiermuth: #88

I like Pat Freiermuth, but just because the Steelers finally invested in a tight end early doesn’t mean that he’s going to be the next Heath Miller. To begin his NFL career, Freiermuth will be the team’s second tight end behind Eric Ebron. Though it may not be long until he moves into a full-time role, we still need to see how he does on the NFL stage.

I have my reservations about Freiermuth as he suffered through a shoulder injury in college, and didn’t look like a great athlete on film (there is no official testing number to go by). In all honesty, Freiermuth could end up having a longer career with the Steelers than Najee Harris who was drafted a round ahead of him in 2021, but that’s because of the longevity of the position, not the talent of the player.

Even though Pat Freiermuth could prove to be a second-contract guy for this team, he could still prove to be very unspectacular and not worth a costly jersey purchase that could otherwise be used on someone else. In addition, it’s possible that Freiermuth reverts back to his old college number of 87 if Kevin Rader doesn’t make the team. I would let his rookie season play out before seeing how to proceed with a potential jersey purchase.
