The Steelers seem content to enter the 2021 season with their current roster, but here are three positions that must be improved.

We knew that there weren’t going to be a lot of big free-agent signings this offseason because of the unfortunate salary cap situation Pittsburgh was in. However, with 9 selections in the 2021 NFL Draft, the Steelers were able to add depth to several key positions.

Unfortunately, other important positions were pretty much neglected altogether. After being far removed from the NFL Draft, I would have thought that the Steelers might do something to help the depth at these positions, but they have been the league’s most quiet team in free agency this year.

The problem is, I’m not sure if the Steelers can afford to stand pat and enter the season with a serve lack of quality depth at three very important positions. Here are their biggest depth issues entering the 2021 season:

Edge defender depth is terrifying

You could make the case for T.J. Watt as the best edge defender in the National Football League, and for my money, he’s a top-three defender in the game right now. However, there is a concerning lack of depth behind him, and so much is banking on him staying healthy this year.

Alex Highsmith proved to be a quality option to step in for the injured Bud Dupree as a rookie, but he will be asked to play a much larger role in 2021. I have no issue with Watt and Highsmith as the staters for this team. Where I do have an issue is with the depth.

Dupree and Ola Adeniyi both signed with the Titans this offseason – leaving veteran Cassius Marsh as the top rotational option. Marsh was awful last season as he was bullied against the run and didn’t get much pressure on the quarterback in passing situations when on the field. I really like rookie Quincy Roche, but he may not be ready to step into such a role. The Steelers need to fix the depth at edge defender before the season.
