The Steelers have some interesting positional battles this year. Here are four long-shot players who could make the roster in 2021.

Every year, there are a few surprise players who emerge during training camp that was never really on that radar. The Steelers had nine selections in the 2021 NFL Draft this year, and there is a chance that each one of them could make the team. However, there are a few players who were not taken in the draft this year who are on the outside looking in.

While it’s unlikely that any of these players will have a major role with the team in 2021, I can’t write them off from making the roster completely this year, as each of these guys offers something the Steelers could use. Here are four long-shot players who could make Pittsburgh’s final roster in 2021:

WR Matthew Sexton

This is a player there has hardly been a whisper about so far this offseason. Matthew Sexton joined the team this offseason after playing his college ball at Eastern Michigan from 2016 to 2019. During this time, Sexton never had a season with terrific production, but he does offer some interesting traits the Steelers could use.

The Steelers official website lists Sexton at 5’11”, but the wide receiver actually measured in a hair under 5’10” and 176 pounds at his Eastern Michigan Pro Day in 2020. Though he’s a bit undersized, Sexton has blazing 4.4 speed and has experience playing both outside and in the slot in college. In addition, the speedy wide-out has given return duties for a time in college and has some experience in that department.

If the Steelers only keep five wide receivers in 2021, it’s going to be awfully hard for someone to beat out Ray-Ray McCloud in training camp. However, if the team were to decide to roll with six, Sexton could land a roster spot. This seems unlikely, but there’s a chance he could really impress and convince Pittsburgh to keep an extra receiver this year.
