QB Joshua Dobbs

Everyone is being quick to label Dwayne Haskins as Pittsburgh’s third quarterback this season. Some are even going as far as to say that he will be the quarterback of the future (which is absurd to me). Though there is a very good chance that Haskins wins the final quarterback job, I wouldn’t be so quick to rule out Joshua Dobbs.

In his first four NFL seasons, Dobbs has thrown just 17 NFL passes. This lack of game experience could hurt his chances of making the final roster. However, though he hasn’t had a lot of chances to prove himself on the field on Sundays, he has a few traits the other quarterbacks on the team are lacking.

Unlike Ben Roethlisberger, Mason Rudolph, and Dwayne Haskins, Dobbs has a terrific set of legs. His mobility inside the pocket and ability to tuck the ball and run are an added asset to his arsenal or traits. The Steelers could use him as the scout team quarterback when preparing to face players like Lamar Jackson or Josh Allen this year.

Additionally, it’s possible that Matt Canada could favor him over Haskins as another tool for his offense. We have seen creative teams (like the New Orleans Saints) bring in athletic quarterbacks to switch things up with the threat of both the run and pass. I wouldn’t be shocked if the Steelers had an interest in using Dobbs in the capacity.
