Not finding a way to re-sign Mike Hilton

Mike Hilton signed with the Cincinnati Bengals during the free agency process after a great career with Pittsburgh. The former undrafted free agent out of Ole Miss had many years of making little to no money in a black and gold uniform on bargain contracts. He eventually got his payday during this offseason. It was a huge pay increase for him but it looks like a reasonable contract for his contributions on the field.

The issue for the Steelers seemed to be how fast Hilton signed with another team. They did not have enough cap space at the time but they could have. If they had made a decision on Steven Nelson earlier then they could have released him and used that cap space to re-sign Hilton rather than JuJu Smith-Schuster. Then the secondary would have gone into the 2021 season with Cam Sutton and Joe Haden as the starting duo on the outside with Hilton returning to dominate the slot role. That would have been a much better move than bringing back a receiver when you already have enough talented players to absorb that loss. The team refused to do this and now they have a bunch of question marks as to who will be able to positively contribute to the slot corner role.
