Brian Poole

Brian Poole is a name I keep circling back to in free agency. While not the most talented cornerback left, he is easily the best slot corner and could likely start there if the Steelers signed him. Even with James Pierre making some noise so far during OTAs, having a natural slot corner couldn’t hurt, especially when they are as capable as Poole is.

The former Jet had one of his best seasons as a pro in 2020, as he only gave up a quarterback rating of 61.6 when targeted. While he is limited to the slot only, that is one of the Steelers’ top needs still. Besides Cameron Sutton, who is slated to play on the outside mostly this year, undrafted rookie Shakur Brown is the only other natural slot cornerback.

Poole could change all of that if he were signed. Considering his market hasn’t been that hot, he likely wouldn’t cost that much at this point. The Steelers likely want to see what they have in their younger options first, which is fine. That said if an injury occurs or one of them falters, Poole is the best free-agent cornerback fit for the team.
