Best-case player comparison: Emmanuel Sanders

In terms of pure play style, many would argue that Diontae Johnson has a lot of Antonio Brown qualities, but I don’t think he could ever be that player in the NFL. Emmanuel Sanders is a much more fair player comparison.

Both Sanders and Johnson were inconsistent to start their NFL careers. Sanders flashed with the Steelers but was also frustrating to watch at times. He didn’t really become a great receiver until he joined Peyton Manning in Denver after his rookie contract. From there, things took off for Sanders.

Johnson possesses a nearly identical frame and a similar skill set as the former two-time Pro Bowl receiver. Both receivers are experts at creating separation prior to the catch; however, I would argue that Diontae Johnson is even better with the ball in his hands.

Because of his ability to play the “X” receiver position and consistently create separation, I could certainly see him as a player who earns a second contract with the Steelers. If all goes well, I think he could easily have an Emmanuel Sanders-type career path.
