Art Rooney “The Chief”

There are no Steelers without “The Chief” Art Rooney. The man saw something special with the NFL and invested in a franchise in 1933. The team went from the Pirates to the Steelers and that would change everything. He struggled to find consistency without any form of winning until that all changed during the 1970s and beyond. This man had many struggles during his time owning the Steelers before the 70s as the team was felt sorry for. They could not win anything and were the jokes of the day. Eventually, time paid off and Rooney would become one of the most successful owners in the NFL.

The Steelers found consistency and success with time and finally became one of the biggest franchises in the league. Without his vision for this team in Pittsburgh, there would be no team for this city. That is hard to imagine today but if it wasn’t for this man and his idea for football in this city, there would be no black and gold running on grass at Heinz Field. This man is a shoo-in when it comes to this Mount Rushmore because it wouldn’t exist without this man. His kindness, humility, values, and fairness is what makes the Rooney’s so popular among owners as his legacy lives on with Art Rooney II and his family.

The Steelers could make a very interesting lineup for their own Mount Rushmore. It is something that could become reality if the city actually wanted to create it.
