Jimmy Garoppolo isn’t nearly as good as Aaron Rodgers, but there is plenty of reasons why the Pittsburgh Steelers could have interest in a trading for the 49ers quarterback. For starters, San Fransico recently traded up to land quarterback Trey Lance with the 3rd overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, and there’s a good chance that Lance could become the starter early this season.

While Garoppolo has been viewed as overpaid, much of his contract has already been handed out in guaranteed money, and what remains is reasonable. Garoppolo would have just one year remaining on his deal with a base salary of $24 million, according to Over the Cap.

Though this seems like a lot for a mid-level NFL quarterback, there are factors that could make this deal worth it. The 49ers likely wouldn’t be asking for much in return, as teams know that Garoppolo needs to be traded. In addition, Garoppolo hasn’t been as bad as you might think. Over his past 22 games, Jimmy G has 34 touchdowns and 18 interceptions. While these totals are underwhelming, he has averaged a whopping 8.2 yards per pass attempt in his NFL career. Roethlisberger hasn’t thrown for more than 7.6 yards per attempt in 5 years.

What could prevent this from being a possibility is that the 49ers could end up trading Garoppolo in 2021. If that’s the case, this won’t be on the table. However, Garoppolo took his team to a Super Bowl and is still just 29 years old. Perhaps this is a stop-gap quarterback they would consider.
