Steelers should have signed McMillan

The Steelers made some big moves early in the offseason when they cut Vince Williams in order to shed some cap space. While the team did end up resigning him later on into the offseason, they could have targeted a younger option to fill in a similar role on the team. Raekwon McMillan is a former second-round pick that has failed to live up to expectations. While a fine run defender, he has proven to be a liability in coverage to this point.

For the Steelers though, Williams is a player in a similar mold. The only difference here is that McMillan is significantly younger and has a longer future in the league ahead of him because of his age. While he is only a two-down, run-stopping linebacker, the Steelers have shown their effectiveness of using players like that as evident by the success a player like Williams has had with the team.

McMillan has great size and decent athleticism. As well, he can chip in on special teams when needed. While signing him would have been more as a depth move, it would give this team another younger option to put next to Devin Bush. His contract was essentially for the minimum as well, making him easily affordable. McMillan wouldn’t have been a huge splash move, but adding him would have been a smart and chap move.
