Steelers roster: 4 big names on the bubble prior to training camp
By Tommy Jaggi
QB Josh Dobbs
Either Joshua Dobbs or Dwayne Haskins isn’t going to make the final cut for the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2021 – I think that’s pretty safe to assume. The Steelers never carry four quarterbacks on their roster, and there have been a few times in recent years when they have only carried two.
At this point, Dobbs may very well be on the outside looking in. This wouldn’t be my choice. I’ve expressed multiple times this offseason that I think a player like Dobbs would be more valuable as the team’s third quarterback. The Steelers could use jobs as a scout team QB in preparation for athletic passers like Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen.
Additionally, Matt Canada could find creative ways to get Dobbs involved on offense – perhaps even using him in a Taysom Hill-like role with the team. However, fending off Dwayne Haskins won’t be easy, as Haskins has been more talked about and has the reputation as a former 15th overall draft pick.
Despite popular belief, this is a battle that Dobbs could emerge victorious from, but it won’t be easy. It’s safe to assume that Ben Roethlisberger and Mason Rudolph are the only quarterbacks locked into a roster spot in 2021.
It will be interesting to watch some of these players battle it out in training camp this year, but I think it’s safe to assume that all four of these players will have to prove themselves if they want to end up on the Pittsburgh Steelers final roster this season.
