Tre Norwood is a player who did a little bit of everything during his time at Oklahoma, and many wondered where the 7th round pick was going to be playing for the Steelers in the secondary. So far, it looks like the rookie could wind up being the primary backup safety for Pittsburgh – especially with Antoine Brooks taking on the nickel role this year.

Despite his late-round draft status, Norwood has been impressive in the early going for the Steelers – showing off his versatility and play-making skills. During Pittsburgh’s July 29th training camp practice, Norwood recorded 2 interceptions – one coming in WRs vs DBs and one in 11-on-11s. This is certainly a great sign for a player wanting to not only stick around but to get into the defensive mix early.

Tre Norwood missed the entire 2019 season with an injury at Oklahoma, but he returned as a redshirt junior to earn 5 interceptions and a defensive touchdown in just 10 games, according to Sports Reference. His former experience as a cornerback before moving to safety is only going to help him in coverage at the next level.

Norwood needs to show the coaching staff that he can keep up this level of consistency, but as of now, he has been one of the most impressive young players at Steelers training camp.
