4 Kevin Colbert draft picks in danger of being cut from Steelers in 2021
By Tommy Jaggi
QB Joshua Dobbs
It pains me to think that Joshua Dobbs could be out of a roster spot after never really getting a fair shot to compete in regular-season action. The athletic young quarterback strung together some impressive preseason performances over the past two years, but only has 17 career pass attempts in regular-season NFL contests, according to Pro Football Reference.
In comparison, Mason Rudolph has already had the chance to sling the rock 326 times, while Dwayne Haskins earned 444 pass attempts over his first two seasons, according to PFR. Rudolph and Haskins are both listed ahead of Dobbs on the team’s initial depth chart.
This doesn’t mean that Dobbs is out of the race, but it puts him at a disadvantage. Fortunately, he should be given the opportunity to prove his worth during training camp and the preseason. With four preseason games, you can bet that Dobbs will see a good deal of action.
Despite his lack of game experience, Dobbs is clearly the most mobile quarterback on this team and his arm is in contention for the biggest on the roster. The 2017 draft class for the Steelers could go down as one of Colbert’s best, but there’s a chance Josh Dobbs won’t be around to help contribute to that.
