After an explosive rookie year, how will Steelers Chase Claypool perform during his sophomore season?

When NFL teams invest in young talent, they expect to see results. Most coaches and general managers understand that there is a transition between collegiate and professional football. Chase Claypool is a player who met all expectations during his rookie year in the National Football League with the Steelers. After having a productive first year, many are wondering what we can expect in 2021.

During the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft, the Pittsburgh Steelers drafted a playmaking threat that could transform their offense. Claypool was joining the Steelers after an explosive senior year at the University of Notre Dame. His 1037 yards receiving and 66 receptions caught the eyes of Pittsburgh’s front office. It was clear that Claypool had the speed and physical ability needed to suit up in the iconic black and gold.

As the 2020 regular season progressed, it was clear that Chase Claypool was a great selection. On September 20th, 2020, the Steelers were able to defeat the Denver Broncos. When the game was over, Chase Claypool had 88 yards receiving. He had also scored his first touchdown of the season. This performance acted as the catalyst to Claypool’s season. Whenever his number was called, he was ready to make a play.

An Explosive Rookie Season

Chase Claypool finished the 2020 regular season with 873 yards receiving and 62 receptions. . It was clear that Chase’s abilities enabled Pittsburgh to do more in the passing game. Throughout the season, Claypool acted as a downfield possession receiver. His 14.1 yards per catch average was the highest on the team. When cornerbacks lined up against Claypool’s 6-foot 4-inch frame, they were automatically at a disadvantage. When speed is brought into the equation, Chase can be hard to handle.

The Pittsburgh Steelers had their first open practice on Wednesday, July 28th. After their 2020 season ended disappointingly, the Pittsburgh organization has its mindset on a successful season. To win this year, the Steelers must be able to rely on their offense as much as they do their defense. When it was time to perform last season, the offense did not meet expectations. As the players make their introductions to the training camp spectators, they will also be focusing on how to be impactful on the field. If the Steelers plan on being successful, they will need Chase Claypool at his best.
