CB Justin Layne

Justin Layne may not turn out to be any good for the Steelers, and I’m sure the team has a good idea of how he’s progressing. However, it’s hardly fair of us to sit back and say that he’s a bad football player after watching him play a grand total of 117 defensive snaps in his first two seasons.

It’s also worth noting that the Steelers never had much of a reason to put Layne into the game prior to this year, as the team was four-deep at cornerback with Joe Haden, Steven Nelson, Mike Hilton, and Cameron Sutton – a group that has been very healthy since Layne joined the league in 2019.

Though Justin Layne was a former 3rd round pick, many thought he would be a 2nd rounder with a chance to sneak into the first. He boasted a remarkable Pro Football Focus grade at Michigan State in 2019 prior to rendering the NFL Draft. In addition, Layne has elite size and athletic tools to work with.

Layne was just 20 years old during his junior season before the draft, and we knew it was going to be pretty raw entering the NFL. So far, he has hardly gotten the opportunity to prove whether or not he could be a starting cornerback for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

As time presses on, these three players may see fewer opportunities on the Steelers and may need to prove their worth on their next teams. Let’s hope they get a chance to display their skills while they are still in Pittsburgh.
