Steelers EDGE Cassius Marsh

I didn’t understand this signing by the Steelers last season, and it still doesn’t make sense to me now. Simply put, there are much better rotational edge defenders out there than Cassius Marsh that Pittsburgh could pursue, and I’m, somewhat surprised he is still around.

Before Melvin Ingram was signed, outside linebacker was one of Pittsburgh’s weakest positions in terms of depth as Marsh and rookie Quincy Roche seemed like the only viable options outside of T.J. Watt and Alex Highsmith. However, with Ingram’s addition, I believe Marsh becomes completely expendable.

The Steelers typically only keep four outside linebackers on their 53-man roster unless someone gets hurt, and three of these players are locks to make the team in Watt, Highsmith, and Ingram. Of the rest of the group, Quincy Roche should prove to be the most deserving of the final spot at the position. Though he still needs to prove himself in training camp and the preseason, he was an excellent pass rusher in college at Temple and Miami. When it comes to Marsh, I just don’t see how he helps this team at all in 2021.

You could make a case to add a few more names to this list. While most of the players mentioned will likely make the roster, I have a hard time seeing what they offer that hasn’t already been covered by someone else at their respective positions.
