5 important observations from Steelers training camp
By Tommy Jaggi
Pittsburgh has a few weeks of practices now in the books. Here are my five most important observations from Steelers training camp.
I spent the past few days in Pittsburgh observing Steelers training camp at Heinz Field. It’s important to be careful about reading too much into practice, but some of my notes are certainly worth sharing with the public.
The Steelers still have over a month before the regular season, so I expect many young players to continue to show growth, but not all news is good and there are positives and negatives that all fans should be aware of. Here are my five biggest observations from Steelers training camp on August 3rd and 4th:
Devin Bush is noticeably better than the group
Despite some other reports that suggested that Devin Bush struggled in this area, he hasn’t so far in August. Now entering his 3rd NFL season, Bush looks like he is much more confident in coverage.
Admittedly, there isn’t a lot to take away from Bush’s game during full-team sessions, as the linebacker has been limited in this area (recently recovered from an ACL tear). However, Bush is noticeably better than the rest of the inside linebackers when it comes to coverage drills.
Though Najee Harris got the best of him on one play, the rookie running back won late in the route. Bush quickly bounced back, however, earning back-to-back pass deflections in coverage. His elite athletic traits are clearly on display. The big test will be seeing if he shows improvement in zone coverage this year.
