I feel like there was something positive to note from nearly every defensive back on the Steelers following the Hall of Fame Game… except for Arthur Maulet. Though he did record 2 solo tackles, Maulet did nothing to warrant praise during this game, and he was beaten badly a few times in coverage.

This is something I witnessed on occasion at Steelers training camp, and Maulet had his struggles with the Jets last year. Coming out of Memphis in 2017, Maulet tested as a horrible athlete with bad speed (4.62 at the NFL Combine) and awful agility testing. This isn’t a recipe for success as a 5’9 1/2” defensive back.

Maulet was in the running to be the team’s top nickel defender this season, but after giving up a few big plays in coverage and not even being close to his wide receiver at times, this is going to hurt his cause. There are younger, bigger, and more athletic defensive backs on this team who outplayed Maulet during the first preseason game of the year, and the 28-year old journeyman has an uphill battle to climb after this lackluster performance.
