Pittsburgh continues to have some young players shine at Steelers training camp. Here are the three biggest notes from their most recent practices.

The NFL Preseason might be boring to most casual fans, but I can assure you that I was engaged for every second of it. In fact, I went back and studied again upon its completion. Though preseason doesn’t paint the whole picture, there were a few things in the Hall of Fame Game that were quite informative.

What’s really telling, however, is when the things that stand out during the preseason continue to do so during Steelers training camp practices. Here are three important notes from camp following the Hall of Fame Game against the Cowboys:

Josh Dobbs continues to outshine Dwayne Haskins

At this point, it’s hardly much of an opinion – especially if we are looking at efficiency numbers. Though Dwayne Haskins looked more impressive than Mason Rudolph at times during training camp, that’s a relatively low bar to clear. During the Hall of Fame Game, Haskins had a disastrous performance that consisted of him averaging a dismal 4.2 yards per attempt and he was clearly of the mark on a few routine passes.

Josh Dobbs, on the other hand, was Pittsburgh’s best quarterback during Pittsburgh’s first preseason game – earning a 122.9 passer rating in this contest. Since then, Dobbs has outshined Haskins over the last few Steelers training camp practices, as his accuracy has been on point with some excellent touch throws down the field.

While I certainly can’t guarantee that Dobbs will see more action this preseason as a result, it only seems right for Mike Tomlin to give his former 4th-round pick more opportunities – especially considering that he only has 17 career passing attempts in the regular season. If Dobbs continues to impress, perhaps he can make it a race for QB3 this year.
