Avery Williamson

Of course, if the coaching staff wants to make this really easy on themselves, they could always call their old pal, Avery Williamson. After Pittsburgh traded for him in 2020, Williamson was immediately thrust into a sizable role.

However, one area where Williamson struggles is in pass coverage. Like Vince Williams, this has been the story of his career. Fortunately, the Steelers would know what they are getting: a downhill linebacker who can run and chase as well as take on blocks.

We know from experience that Avery Williamson is a pretty average player. However, that could still be an upgrade over Robert Spillane in a position that he may not be best in. Spillane is a poor athlete who has been dusted in coverage far too often this summer. While Williamson won’t thrive in this department either, at least he’s a much better athlete who is an ideal fit as a ‘Buck’ linebacker.

Because Williamson has been sitting on the market so long, he could be picked up on a very cheap deal. By him rejoining the team, Pittsburgh wouldn’t have to rely so heavily on Robert Spillane in 2021.

The Steelers don’t want to have any weak links on defense with so much riding on the 2021 season. With some extra cap space to work with, it could be worth bringing one of these three linebackers in to replace Robert Spillane as the starter.
