QB Josh Dobbs

For as well as Josh Dobbs has looked in exhibition action at times over the years, it baffles me that the athletic quarterback has only earned 17 pass attempts in the regular season since entering the NFL as a 4th round pick in 2017.

This summer, there is a case to be made that Dobbs has been the single-most impressive passer at Steelers training camp in 2021, as he is completing throws down the field at a much higher rate than the other passers on the team despite limited opportunities.

Regardless of how well Dobbs plays moving forward in the preseason, the Steelers seem like they already have their mind made up with which three quarterbacks they want on the roster this year. Obviously, Ben Roethlisberger is the starter and Mason Rudolph isn’t going anywhere thanks to his contract extension and guaranteed money.

This means that Dobbs needs to beat out Dwayne Haskins for the final QB spot. If reps are any indication so far in training camp and the preseason, Dobbs isn’t going to be given a fair shot to do so. This is just the reality of the situation.

Obviously, we hope the best players win out at each position on the Steelers roster. Unfortunately for these players, they are on the outside looking in.
